Beginning of Credit Score

The concept of credit scoring and the establishment of credit scores can be traced back to the mid-20th century. The founding of the credit scoring system is attributed to engineer William R. Fair and mathematician Earl J. Isaac, who formed the Fair Isaac Corporation (now known as FICO) in 1956.

Fair and Isaac recognized the need for a standardized and objective approach to assess an individual’s creditworthiness. This approach lacked consistency and hindered effective comparison and analysis of creditworthiness among different borrowers.

Their model, known as the FICO score, employed mathematical algorithms to generate a numerical representation of an individual’s credit risk. This three-digit credit score provided a uniform measure of creditworthiness, enabling lenders to make more informed lending decisions.
